How did India come to be named?
Many many thousands of years ago, in the land that the world now knows as India flowed seven sacred rivers that defined its boundaries. Way up to the north flowed the Sindhu. The land beyond the Sindhu held great attraction from travelers from Central Europe. The river Sindhu was modified in name to the Indus, by the them, with the ancient Greeks refereeing to the people of this land as the Indoi. From the Greek Indoi was derived the now well known, “India,” though the land was known since ancient times as Bharata.
