When is World Coconut Day?
We know of a day for doctors, a day to celebrate friendship and even a day to celebrate elephants. But, have you heard of the World Coconut Day?
World Coconut Day aims at making people aware of the multiple benefits of the humble coconut, which interestingly is actually a fruit and not a nut!
September 2 has been designated Coconut Day since the year 2009 by the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC) headquartered at Jakarta, Indonesia. The APCC’s™ foundation day also falls on September 2.
The APCC is an inter-governmental organisation of 18 member countries mandated to promote, coordinate, and harmonise coconut developmental activities of the Asian Pacific region. All major coconut growing countries including India are members of the APCC. The celebration is aimed at creating an awareness about the importance of the coconut and its potential in alleviating poverty, encouraging investments and promoting the development of the coconut industry in the member countries.
